About ED SITEMAN
"I’ve had this dream of running a marathon once in my lifetime. Now that I just turned 50, I figure if I’m going to run one it better be soon."

I’m a single parent of two daughters—now ages 14 and 24—and work full-time as a global sourcing manager for Hewlett-Packard. Finding time to train isn't easy.

My Story

The dream of running a marathon has been in the back of my mind for years. I signed up for the Houston Marathon next January, even though I haven’t run since I was on the track team in high school.

I'm currently running in the three to five mornings a week. Most days I go for 3 or 4 miles and try to run long once a week—the farthest I’ve run so far is 7 miles. I’ve already lost 10 pounds, and I think the gym will help me round out my fitness and work some strength and flexibility training into my routine as I prepare for 26.2 miles.

I’ve been a single parent for the past 10 years, so it can be tough to squeeze in time to exercise. I usually run in the mornings in between dropping my 14-year-old off at school at 6 a.m. and starting work at 8 a.m. My daughter is in the marching band, and I’m part of the marching band pit crew, which is a group of dads that help to move the percussion-section equipment on and off the field—another reason the strength training may help.
