Building confidence to get hockey-fit

Ross Long

By Christine Fennessy

Goal: “Drop 30 pounds, so in my 50s I can join a hockey league—something I haven’t done since high school.”

Ross Long

Age: 49
Occupation: Management
24 Hour Fitness Club: Ocean Avenue, San Francisco

The Plan

“To avoid plateaus, my workout is always changing. I aim for 5 or 6 days a week of cardio, rotating between the treadmill, elliptical trainer, and bike. I do moves that hit multiple muscle groups; instead of leg presses, I’ll do jumping lunges, so I gain some muscle and burn body fat.”

The Obstacle

“I’ve always quit before I reached my goals because I lack confidence. At my age, I wonder if I can lift big weights or throw myself in the air to do a clapping push-up without falling on my face—things I’ve never done before.”

The Solution

The key to raising Ross’s confidence is to push him to levels beyond what he thinks he can do, says Mario Yimenez, his personal trainer at the Ocean Avenue 24 Hour Fitness. At first, new exercises seem too challenging, but with practice (and smart, sensible progress) it’ll get easier, and he’ll gain confidence.
